5 Security Steps to Take When Buying a Home

You've chosen a home in a safe neighborhood. Maybe you've already made friends with some of the neighbors. But that doesn't mean you can afford to lag behind on home security. And just because the home you buy has plenty of locks and deadbolts doesn't mean that your family is automatically secure.

Here are some of the top home security steps to take when moving into your new home.

1. Find a Reputable Locksmith

Some homeowners don't have a clear picture of what a locksmith job entails. While lock installation may sound like an easy job, that doesn't mean you don't have to think about whether your contractor is qualified before you hire them. After all, this professional is in charge of your home security, so you don't want to skimp on quality or price.

Choose a locksmith that comes with the right qualifications and has high recommendations from others in the community to avoid problems. Fiascos such as incorrectly installed locks, holes drilled in your doors in the wrong places, and lower-quality locks could cripple your home security, so quality locksmith workmanship should be a priority.

2. Replace Door Locks and Inspect Deadbolts

Keeping the same door locks that the last owners of the house used is a huge security risk. After all, you have no idea who they may have given keys to. One option is to re-key the locks so they only respond to new keys instead of the ones the previous owners had. But changing the locks completely can have advantages too.

For instance, you may be able to update to a more modern lock or a product that has higher ratings and more safety features. Or you could switch out all the hardware on your doors to match your desired home decor style. You should also check the deadbolts on your doors to make sure they have high resistance against intruders that may try to drill, kick open, or pick the lock on your door.

3. Add Locks and Child Safety Features to Windows

Make protecting your door a priority, but remember that windows can also be points of entry for criminals and don't neglect them. Have your locksmith take a look at any window locks that are in place to see if they can be improved.

Since glass can be quite easy to shatter if criminals want to get through, you should also install something to protect windows against being smashed. A security film, bars on the windows, or a security screen made of tough wire mesh may help. And make sure your windows have child safety features if you have children or grandchildren.

4. Check Landscaping and Security Lighting

If you're an avid gardener or enjoy outdoor living, you're probably looking forward to remodeling your new yard. But regardless, you should check the yard for possible security issues.

For example, make sure you have plenty of security lighting, check for vulnerabilities in the fence, and ensure that the landscaping doesn't provide cover for break-ins.

5. Install Alarm System

A whole-house alarm system can add another layer of protection to your home. The alarms may be placed on your doors and windows and can alert security personnel if something (such as an illicit entry) triggers an alarm sensor.

These five steps will help you ensure your new home is a safe and secure place for you and your family. You'll be able to move in and sleep securely at night knowing you've taken the necessary precautions.
